KEN SMALL has been in the graphic arts and printing business for 45 years, beginning at the early age of 13. In 1964 he began Alken Printing Company in Kansas City, Missouri. He produced a wide range of high quality process color work for books and other literature, along with 30-40 employees. He provided services to such notables as Avon Products, Bell-Saw Machinery, and Russell Stover Candies.
Ken’s expertise with the opt-in mail order business stems from his work at Golden Touch Records, where he was in charge of creating, designing and selling educational literature to 30,000 doctors nationwide. Later, he bought the company from Golden Touch and merged it with Alken Printing Company.
Ten years later, he moved the company to Blue Springs, Missouri where his business flourished until he retired in 2000. But retirement was not for him—book publishing and printing was in his blood. He turned right around and started Digital Book Designs, offering a full range of design and production services, from manuscript development to final print.
